National Foster Care Month

Governor Josh Shapiro issued a proclamation declaring May 2026 as National Foster Care Month in Pennsylvania, recognizing the thousands of children, youth, caregivers and professionals who work every day to create safe and supportive paths to permanency.

The proclamation highlights the importance of foster care as a bridge to healing, stability, and hope for children experiencing crisis. As of March 31, 2025, more than 11,000 children in Pennsylvania were in out-of-home care, supported by resource families, kinship caregivers, advocates, and child welfare professionals who are dedicated to helping them thrive.

National Foster Care Month is an opportunity to honor the families who open their homes and hearts to children in need while also recognizing the ongoing need for more supportive resource families across the Commonwealth. The proclamation calls on communities to work together to raise awareness and ensure every child has access to a safe, nurturing home.

Throughout May, communities across Pennsylvania celebrated foster families and supported efforts that strengthen permanency and well-being for children and families.
