The 27th Annual Pennsylvania Permanency Conference will be held June 12-14, 2019, at the Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in the Pocono Mountains. This conference provides an opportunity for families and professionals from all aspects of the child welfare system to support one another and work together to achieve permanent connections for all children and youth.
This year’s conference will open with a presentation from The Honorable G. Helen Whitener who serves on the Superior Court of Pierce County, Washington. Her keynote speech, "Adoptions: Transcending Differences," will discuss the importance of understanding implicit and explicit bias, cultural competency and why diversity, equity and inclusion are important in the adoption process. Judge Whitener is an active speaker locally, nationally and internationally. She presents talks about human rights, access to justice and the responsibility of the judiciary to ensure the rights of all that appear before the court to basic dignity and respect in judicial proceedings.
The closing keynote, "Growing Up Adopted," will be presented by Jessica Damiano. Jessica was placed for adoption as an infant and learned of her adoption as a small child – long before she understood the many emotions associated with it. In fact, the first time her parents told her that she was adopted, she responded with a little confusion, immediately asking the question, "What? I’m a doctor?!" Jessica’s story will highlight her personal experiences growing up in an adoptive home and welcoming more siblings into a family where the topic of adoption has always been surrounded by love and sorrow, warmth and tears, and loss and laughter.
The Permanency Conference offers 43 workshops and institutes addressing a variety of topics regarding permanency for children and youth in out-of-home care and the families who serve them. You also won’t want to miss the recognition awards banquet on June 12 at 5:30 p.m., which honors families, youth and professionals who go above and beyond in their support of the permanency and well-being of waiting children and youth. Then, join us for a Family Fun Night on June 13 at 6 p.m., a delightful evening that gives everyone a chance to meet and share stories while enjoying a buffet dinner and the many forms of entertainment that the Kalahari offers.
