2014 Adoption Awareness Grants

Once again for November’s National Adoption Month, the Office of Children, Youth and Families (OCYF) set aside $50,000 for adoption coalitions and agencies in Pennsylvania to host adoption awareness events that focus attention on adoption.  The number of proposals submitted this year doubled from last year – with a total of 39!  Seventeen county agencies and 22 private, nonprofit agencies or coalitions are excited and ready for their events to begin as early as next week.

The events scheduled for this year sound really exciting!  Several Adoption Day events in the counties will honor current families who will finalize their adoptions that day, as well as others who adopted this past year.  The events will include food, pictures, prizes and fun.  A few informational events will also take place offering food, adoption resources, stories from adoptive families and time for questions.

Some fun activities scheduled across the state include skating rinks, trampoline parks, bowling alleys, a movie night, a carnival, a fashion show and hanging out at Chuck E Cheese.  A few run/walk events  will bring awareness to adoption, and a few parades will include floats about adoption. One family will be honored at a Flyer’s hockey game, and  adoption information will be handed out to all who visit the event table that night!

All of these events take lots of planning and preparation, and you can feel the excitement when you speak to the agency planners!  These events will be hosted by county and private agency workers, along with support from some of our SWAN staff including our regional technical assistants, Pennsylvania Adoption Exchange coordinators and SWAN Legal Service Initiative staff.

Look for one of these events in your area by visiting www.adoptpakids.org and making plans to attend – you will be so happy that you did!
